The big advantages of mountaineering boots are the stability they provide whilst carrying heavy loads and their ability to “edge” while climbing steeper slopes. Most mountaineering boots support automatic or semi-automatic crampons for ice travel and are built to withstand the cold, often being double-layered (with an inner liner and outer shell) for warmth in sub-zero temps. Mountaineering boots are therefore used for glacier travel, ice climbing, high altitude trekking and technical alpine ascents. Most people hiking a mountain in the UK opt for less technical hiking boots, with more flex than a full-on mountaineering boot, to make walking easier.
