Modern tents come with integrated groundsheets but many people also use a footprint to help protect the tent’s groundsheet / floor from cuts and abrasions caused by rocks, roots and debris on the ground. By taking the brunt of wear and tear, a footprint helps prolong the life of the tent, especially for lightweight Backpacking Tents with thin floors. A footprint provides an important extra layer of protection against moisture seeping up from wet ground. A footprint keeps the bottom of the tent cleaner by preventing direct contact with dirt, mud and moisture, making it easier to pack up. Some tents have an option for "fly-only" setup using just a footprint and a flysheet, creating a minimalist shelter.
